Slide, layout, master — who owns the look
A PowerPoint theme is a three-level inheritance chain: each slide points to a layout (cover, title + content, blank…), and each layout points to the master, which holds the shared background, fonts and color scheme. A slide shows its own text and pictures, and inherits everything else through the chain — which is why changing the theme's fonts later restyles every slide at once.
Own content on the slide, look-and-feel from layout and master. The generated deck can be restyled in PowerPoint (Design tab) or edited slide by slide in the PPT Viewer / Editor.
