Scheme 11: Phone Keypad Letter Encoding
Phone keypad encoding maps the 26 English letters to the digits 2–9 according to the standard telephone keypad layout. Commonly used for vanity phone numbers (e.g. 1-800-FLOWERS dials 1-800-3569377) and in multi-tap text entry systems. Numbers 0 and 1 have no associated letters; 0 is treated as a space in this converter and 1 maps to itself. Punctuation and non-alpha characters pass through unchanged when converting letters → numbers.
Keypad letters, T9 and phonewords

The letters on phone keys follow one international layout (ITU-T E.161): 2=ABC through 9=WXYZ, with no letters at all on 0 and 1 — which is why a phoneword never contains the digit 1. T9 was the predictive input method that guessed a whole word from one key press per letter, because each key stands for three or four letters.

The mapping is many-to-one: CALL and BALL both dial 2255, so decoding digits back to letters yields combinations rather than one answer — this page lists the alternatives.
